Black hole - Media Language

From the title opening shot the editing has made it feel as if the observer is travelling through a black hole to watch the short film. This is a great technique because it mirrors and foreshadows the events of the film. Shortly after this we see a mini camera pan which directs us to a typical boring slightly outdated office. We know this because of the old computers and props that surround.
We first see the one and only character in the mini pan which leads into a series of close up/medium shots where we can see from his  dress that he is stuck in a dead end job which he hates and makes little effort and little money, he dresses formal but a very poor formal with lack of professionalism and pride.

We can see from his facial expressions and from the time on the clock behind him that he is completely fed up and its late at night and shouldn't be working. Due to it being at night the
lighting is low and poor, this is to mirror his feelings towards the situation he is in. It's dull and boring.

And once an issue with the photocopier occurs he doesn't react in the way you'd think, he expects it in a way, and simply kicks the bottom of the system to try and make it start again. When he lifts up the lid in the photo on the right hand side we get a very good lighting affect from the photocopier, a green glow shines on him, they could have used this light to replicate the alienness of what is about to occur with what he finds.

As we are hit with more and more fast cuts showing us the character from different parts around the office and the aggravation of the photocopier not working we see foley's start to be introduced as well as non diegetic sound from him sighing, however these noises and the background computer humming noises are all the sound that is in the short film due to there being no dialogue at all, the only other sounds that we hear are the alien foley sounds of whenever the man interacts with the 'black hole' a vibration electronic sound is heard. A good example of this is when he first encounters the black hole and the editing technique which uses his hand vanishing its very well executed.

In this same scene we see multiple match on actions as well as an eyeline match when he looks at the paper once printed. Once he comes to the realisation of what he can do with this piece of paper he begins to look very smug and makes several facial expressions to show this and an another eyeline match to the vending machine which he intends on stealing from.

When we see the door in which his next challenge is the lighting becomes even lower to show that he shouldn't be there and what he's doing is wrong. As he begins to steal from the safe we see multiple shots and fast paced action as he takes out the money, this is to replicate his heart rate how exciting any how everything is quickening up. This shot on the right hand side gives the impression that he is going to be caught because it is from the angle of a door way from where someone could be standing such as in a POV shot. The diegetic sound increases and builds up in a crescendo fashion to make the audience think that something is going to happen.  Once the man falls in the safe from a side on camera profile shot then diegetic sound stops and then we hear a ver faint knocking from inside the safe which symbolises the loneliness. As the camera jump cuts backwards back into the office away from the safe this is shown even more.

  1. Good James, your TA is definitely improving.

To further improve this as a post , consider the following :-

You are dealing with 4 different technical codes - when you are referring to these, use colour consistently 9Red for Sound, Green for editing and so on). This will make it more visual, but also shows you if you have covered all 4 codes equitably.

    2. Screen grabs - anchor these to relevant textual point.

    3. More screen grabs.

    4. You could talk over the top of the film and pause it every once in a while to comment?

Level 3, but easy to improve

Also, anything that particularly inspired you?
