Lovefield - Narrative

The opening scene of Lovefiled gives a very negative and scary vide due to the continuous non diegetic soundtrack of danger and violence. restricted narration is used to fool the view into a false sense of what's actually occurring. Within the short film many action and enigma codes are used, as proposed by Roland Barthes. The first being the eerie soundtrack and sound of the dead phone tone playing out giving the impression that someone was in trouble and calling for help when something bad occurred and they were unable to use the phone.

The second and most likely important is the crow, it is seen throughout the short film and is crucial to the plot. It signifies and resembles danger and horror, the fact that the main character always had multiple eyeline matches with it and how it continuously croaked using a foley affect made it seam as though the crow was mirroring the crime and horror that the viewer thinks is occurring.

The sign gives you a real impression of the area that they are surrounded in it is vast and remote. There is nothing for miles and if something awful is occurring then there is nobody around to stop it. The sign immediately gives a grim impression of the surroundings due to the fact that it creaks and croaks giving a typical horror and scary feel to the film.
Due to the fact that the film is in a linear narrative structure, Todorovs 5 stage process can be applied.

The first stage is an EQUILIBRIUM - This is what happens at the start of the film when everything is normal and neutral. We are shown multiple shots of the field and this gives us the sense that nothing is occurring, it is peaceful, however this is until the eerie background music kicks in and makes the audience feel uneasy.

The second stage of Todorov's stage process is DISRUPTION - This is when something messes with and changes the normal events going on within the beginning of the film. For example when we first get a camera shot of the props that are on the ground, the bloody underwear, a broken phone and a knife. All of them suggesting that a crime has been committed.

The next stage is CONFRONTATION -
In Lovefield the audience are lead to believe that the man is an antagonist at first as restricted narration is present at first. Because of this, the confrontation is when the man starts to panic and the temp increases as he runs to his car frantically as we can see in the screenshot on the right hand side.

The 4th stage is RESOLUTION, this is where we come to the realisation that the main is actually helping the women give birth and isn't harming her in anyway, the start of the film is a great decoy in the way it completely puts a different image of whats occurring in your mind, we assume the worst due to the props and music however the resolution shows than the man is being the good guy, and he simply saw the women struggling from his tractor which is left in the field so he can attend to the women in need.

The 5th and final stage is the NEW EQUILBIRIUM, I think this is when it becomes completely clear that the women is in no harm and she has in fact just given birth. The music changes to a happy and harmonious tune and the whole feeling of the film is changed and almost makes the audience feel bad for assuming the worst and judging the farmer. The cameras pan around and give us an over shot of the area and the police come to aid the women.

  1. try to integrate more actual terms - so instead of the music changes, say the non diegetic sound changes and becomes parallel with the happy events that have unfolded. Do you see what i mean. Always look to apply your key terminology - it is a clear part of the mark scheme.

Presentation - try to incorporate some colour - size sub-titles differently. Use colour consistently - maybe all editing terms and references can be one colour, for example.

    Your actual analysis is good.
